A Guide to Colombo International Airport

 The Bandaranaike International Airport (IATA: CMB, ICAO: VCBI) in Katunayake, north of Colombo, is the main international gateway to Sri Lanka. Known locally as BIA or Katunayake Airport, it serves six million passengers a year and acts as a hub for SriLankan Airlines, the national carrier, as well as Air Asia, Jet Airways, Condor, Emirates and Cathay Pacific. It is also a key cargo terminal.

The airport is served by three car parks: the terminal car park, the remote car park and a dedicated long-term parking lot. The car parks are operated by private companies and offer short- and long-term rates. Shuttle buses run between the terminal and the car parks.

Once you’re past security, all gates are located in one main terminal building connected to a single concourse. The first level of this concourse houses the arrival and departure halls. Once you enter the main body of the terminal, you’ll find duty-free shops, a cafeteria, a smoking lounge and day-rooms & showers. The upper floor of the terminal houses two airline lounges and a conference room. There is also a postal office, telephone booths and a communications counter offering international direct dialling, email and fax services. In addition, six banks operate from the terminal building, providing currency exchange services.

A big, prominent information desk is located on the first floor of the terminal building. It offers basic airport and tourist information, as well as a range of useful travel guides and brochures. The information desk is open around the clock.

There is a small shop in the arrivals hall, as well as several food and drink outlets, including coffee shops, fast-food restaurants and bars. In addition, there is a selection of duty-free shops, ranging from jewellery to perfume. You can also find a pharmacy and a post office at the terminal. An expressway between the airport and central Colombo opened in October 2013, cutting the journey time to 30 minutes or less depending on traffic conditions. You can reach the airport by driving north from the city center on the A1 highway to the junction with the Katunayake Expressway E03, then onto the Canada Friendship road. If you prefer not to drive, an airport shuttle bus runs to the main bus terminal 500m (1,640ft) from the terminal, where intercity buses leave every 30 minutes (a ride to central Colombo costs eRs 110). For a more adventurous option, try hopping in a tuk-tuk, a small cart hitched on to the back of a scooter.
